A Short Article related to Linux for Those Dummies who Refuse to Understand the Hour-Long Speech I Had to Make to Them

I hope you know what open source is it will take too long to explain again. if not see my blog

--

This must be the 103767948th resource on this topic but people are SO RELUCTANT TO LISTEN

NOW I WILL SEND THIS TO WHOEVER ASKS “HOW TO DOWNLOAD LINUX” BWAHAHAHA

WWWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYY DDDDONT YYOOOOU ALLLLL LLLLLLLIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSTTTTTTTEEEEEENNNNNN ITTTT IIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSS EEEEAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSYYYYYYYYYY

(REST OF THE ARTICLE IS NOT LIKE THIS DON'T WORRY)

--

NEXT PERSON TO ASK ME 'HOW TO INSTALL LINUX' OR 'WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD LINUX' AND AFTER LISTENING TO MY SPEECH SAYS IT IS TOO COMPLICATED WITHOUT ACTUALLY TRYING IT IS GOING TO, LETS SAY, FACE MY WRATH

--

THIS IS, QUITE POSSIBLY, THE WORST WAY TO WRITE AN ARTICLE ON LINUX, AND SUCH ARTICLES HAVE BEEN PROBABLY DONE ABOUT 827463873 TIMES BEFORE. I HAVE LINKED A PRETTY GOOD ONE IN THE END

BUT THE QUALITY OF ACTUALLY DOING SOME RESEARCH BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS IS PRACTICALLY NONEXISTENT. SO IS THE FACT THAT DIFFERENT PEOPLE MIGHT WANT TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY, AND WILL HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS ON A TOPIC.

THE ATTITUDE OF 'ANYTHING WHICH IS NOT LIKE WHAT I DO IS THE WRONG WAY TO DO IT' IS SOMETHING WHICH WILL LAND YOU VERY HIGH ON MY HIT LIST, 'YOU' HERE BEING MOST PEOPLE WHO USE WINDOWS(R) (TM) (C) AND THINK LINUX IS THE WRONG WAY TO DOING STUFF JUST BECAUSE WINDOWS DOES IT A DIFFERENT WAY AND YOU ARE USED TO IT

--

SORRY FOR CAPSLOCK I COULDN'T BOTHER WITH DOING THE CAPITAL LETTER PUNCTUATION STUFF

Linux is a group of OSs like Windows, Mac etc.

It is FREE (emphasis for eye catching) and open-source, unlike the other two mentioned above. It was started as a clone of the Unix systems.

Linux is a kernel not an OS. As in it only provides the core of the OS

There are various ‘distros’ (short for distribution) which provide a Linux kernel with many software ‘packages’

You can’t just go and download Linux
, you need to download a distro instead. For e.g. Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, RHEL, openSUSE, Arch etc.

If you are thinking ‘well the distros only provide extra software I will use only base linux’, NO linux kernel cannot be used by its own, you NEED to get a distro

Also everything in Linux can be modified as everything is a different software package. For example=> if you remove a set of packages labelled xorg, you will remove the graphical interface itself, next time you open your PC it will open in the black and white text only mode. This is something 'Glass-furniture-to-let-in-wind-and-light-usually-on-walls' or Malus domestica will EVER give an option for

To reemphasize, LINUX IS NOT AN OS BY ITSELF YOU CANT JUST GO AND DOWNLOAD IT

As everything can be modified, the GUI DE is different for most distros

Unlike other popular operating systems, Linux distros can be modified however much you want, to the point that if you see their screenshots you won’t even recognise them as being related. These GUIs (graphical user interfaces) are known as Desktop environments (DEs) and the default DE differs from distro to distro.

Examples:

Cinnamon

GNOME

i3wm

KDE Plasma

A customized XFCE

Unity

XFCE

(Images owned by respective owners)

See any similarity? Nope. That exactly is why I prefer using Linux, as it offers so much choice (and also open source, free, etc. etc.) Try doing all this on a 'Glass-furniture-to-let-in-wind-and-light-usually-on-walls' or a Malus domestica PC.

Here is a much much better, but lengthier, more detailed (and less screamy) article on the same topic as this one. Here's  another. Now stop bugging me, please, pleaeess, please, please, pleaes ,pleas ,eplea es,epalesea, ple aslp, ape sep,lpa els, aep,lp aels ea

(I had originally made this as a PPT for a friend who apparently refuses to inject my hours and hours of explanations into their long-term memory and then says Window(R)(TM)(C) is better as 'Linux does not have a preinstalled voice assistant'. Hope you understand my point now, friend)

Swap 'em Out : Introduction

Welcome to Swap 'em Out! This is a new series on my blog where I will make posts on how to switch from a certain software to another, free and open source software alternative. The aim is to gradually switch from using closed source, proprietary software to using only free and open source software.

FOSS without Fuss

We all use PCs. With the schools going virtual, we all use our devices for multiple tasks: attending live classes, managing schoolwork, preparing for exams using online study materials etc. The more creative ones use them to produce electronic art, literature etc. Why? To express our thoughts and ideas. To portray our feelings and expressions. To ‘excersice our rights’, some might say. But to those of you who went for the last one, and those of you who didn’t as well, have you ever wondered about your software rights?

how i created my own website

To those of you wondering whether I have actually tried the steps mentioned here, I am the idiot who actually did all this. I made a Raspberry Pi server (without dynamic IP or DNS) just to test whether the 8-page article I wrote actually works. I shut it down after running it for about 2 minutes (I soon figured out my ever-useful Raspberry Pi Zero would not survive a single DDos attack (distributed denial-of-service attack- basically, so many devices try to access a website that the server overheats and explodes. Usually the aim is to shut down the website.) Guess it will now be used for hosting a minetest server as soon as I get how to do it
